Dinghy News - The Harbour Challenge

Last Sunday 21 July, Races 3&4 of the Harbour Olympic Challenge were sailed. The first two on 6th July were abandoned due to strong winds so it was all to play for! The event also doubled up as our final 150th Anniversary Dinghy Races.
Twenty-eight boats left the Club in very light winds. So light we wondered if there would even be enough wind to sail. Thankfully, as the first race started, the wind filled in and two races were completed on a triangle, sausage course with some close handicap results.
Before the racing, coffee, tea, and donuts were provided by Ellie New and when the sailors returned, Adrian BBQ Bowden had burgers and hotdogs ready for everyone with a lovely atmosphere in the Clubhouse.
Prize-giving in the Clubroom saw the overall winner and first Class 4 boat go to Simon Percival in his Finn, winning the Harbour Challenge Tankard. The Winklepicker Trophy for first Scow went to John Challenor and first Class 5 boat went to Keith Barkway. The race also saw 5 excellent Junior sailors on the water with the first Junior Sailor being Isis Greenland in her RS Tera Pro. Two new trophies were also presented for first Junior in Class 4 Freya James and first Junior in Class 5 Isis Greenland. As well as the usual silverware for the race, the top three from Class 4, 5, the Scows and Juniors took home glass 150th Anniversary commemorative trophies to keep and a 150th Anniversary flag was signed by the sailors and handed to the Commodore.

ODM Trophy Race and Mudeford SC Scow Open Meeting
On Saturday 3rd August ten scows took part in the ODM Trophy Race (which nowadays for scows is to the cruiser Finish Mark and back as the ODM itself is considered too far off shore for scow safety). Congratulations to Paul Mecklenburgh in "Captain Beaky" who was first across the finish line, John Challener in "Quacker " second, Graham Fairbrass in "Wild Duck" third - and all the competitors.
Monday 5th's Mudeford SC Scow Open had a fleet of ten scows sailing down from CSC to take part in three races, this time with John first and Paul second with Ian Bray in "Bonus" third. Congratulations to these three, the other seven competitors and especially Clive Hindley, Nick Mason and Paul Hansen who had the stamina for both the ODM and the Open Day! Thanks to Ian Wright and Chris Lloyd-Smith for a long day in "Juno" supporting us.
